 LOOK UP, GOLD
acrylic on panel, 24"x16", about 2018

A triad of paintings, women's heads that are partially transparent, merging with the deep landscape.  The women are clothed in flowers, some with jewel like centers.  They are looking up.  Reaching for spiritual transcendence.  Feeling merged with the universe.

WALKING TALL, close up

WALKING TALL,  face close up

The color glows, intense and harmonious.  The woman is walking through a flower mandala. There is a spiritual aura to her, perhaps she is traversing a portal to another state of consciousness.

Collage giclée of digital elements on panel.  Also available as an archival print.  Hanging on your wall, it will add a touch of joy to your room.  E mail me for collage,  go to Saatchi to order an archival print.

Temporal Bone Skullpture

Temporal Bone

Acrylic skullpture,

The temporal bone is one of the bones that suture together to make the upside down bowl that contains our brains.   We are very proud of the, grey wrinkled jelly substance protected by the firm bowl.  We think that it makes us rational, smart.  The rational area of the brain is the frontal lobe, but it is greatly effected and affected by  the limbic system.  That primitive area is responsible for our emotions, emotions often overrule rationality.  The limbic system is in the center of the brain and is the center of our life.  Strong emotions veto rationality.  The limbic system is our built in trickster character.  The Cheshire Cat is curled up cozy in the middle of a muddle of miles of jelly wiring.

Comment from KNOW BUDDY:  Janet, what the duck are you doing?  Making vast generalizations about neuroanatomy. You have only rudimentary knowledge of these matters.  You are making it up as you go along.  Please, keep your ignorance to yourself.

This skullpture started as an anatomical model for anatomy study.  The model was cast from an actual cadaver.  There are three areas of design, created with acrylic paint.  The face is black with interference colors and silver for highlights.  The right side of the head is thick translucent painted roses on a black ground.  Contrasting with the black ground, the left side of the head is patterned with metallic gold and a beigey  gold flat paint.  The base of the support is an antique rescued wood block.

Influences and inspiration are too numerous to list.  "Day of the Dead", sugar skulls and pOp art, are at the top of the list.

The name "Temporal Bone", references not only part of the skull, but also, makes a hint about time.  Skulls remind us that time is passing, make the most of every day, no matter what the Cheshire Cat throws at you.

Dear KNOW BUDDY, Please keep your ignorance to yourself.

Spring with Cheshire Cat

 Spring with Cheshire Cat

close up

archival inkjet print, 5/6/21

This lovely woman named Spring, is bedecked with beautiful flowers.  She is swaying gracefully in a vintage forest.  Her hand gestures towards the cat.  Everything is beautiful, except for the Cheshire Cat.  That Cat!  The image of the trickster signifies all the dirty tricks that life bestows.  Is he evil?  Maybe, maybe not.  He is the one throwing glitches at earthlings everyday.  I, you, can blame the trickster.  When your bad thumb pushes the wrong button on the clicker, blame the Cheshire Cat.  When I get confused and cook the recipe wrong,  the Cheshire Cat made me do it.  When one is called into the managers office for an anal evaluation, and things do not go well, that is definitely the Cheshire Cat playing annoying tricks.

I found the inspiration for this image on FaceBook. Someone, I wish that I could remember who, posted a series of vintage photos from about a hundred years ago.  I worked the image up in photoshop.  Lots of fun adding color and making flowers.  The original image had a rabbit, which I replaced with the Trickster Cat, adding a dash of irony, to spice things up.

Rose Dancer

Rose Dance

Rose Dance
digital work, archival inkjet print, 5/21

There is something spiritual about this picture.  A beautiful, feminine dancer is ecstatically merging with the graceful lines and vibrant color of an exquisite rose.  I think that it portrays the height of joy.  An epiphany of light.

Created in photoshop for archival ink jet prints. This is similar to an image that I created a few years ago.  I used the same female silhouette from an earlier picture.

The openness of her posture shows an abandonment of worry, escape from the nagging of daily reality.  A portal has opened for her to a higher level of spirit.

When you look at this, I hope that you are aware of the human potential for joy. I hope that your heart strings vibrate with vibrant color.

Visible Woman, Enlivened

Photoshop image,  24M,  10/2018

Visible Woman, Enlivened

Visible Woman is the name of a toy.  It is a model figure illustrating simple pregnant female anatomy, that a child can assemble.  The toy has been around for maybe fifty years.  Not so long ago, and even today, there was, still is, a taboo against teaching a young female about her own body.  A human can drive a car, without knowing how an internal combustion engine works.  A girl can run and jump without even a hint of knowledge about muscles, bones and blood circulation.  However, when the storms of adolescence make landfall, it would comfort her, and help her to guide her life, to know about the tubes and folds of flesh and the cat 5 hormones that roar and whirl wind her mind and body.  It would help her to know about the cycles of the moon.

Sex, Sex, Sex.  Sexual images are everywhere, enticing us to buy, buy, buy. The choices for a girl range from cloistered nun to Fellini orgies.  She can be a saint or a slut or anywhere in between. The traditional route features marriage and donating her body to incubate infants.  Each human has a personal path.  Not all decisions are made by reasoning,  however, information helps.

A human girl needs level, healthy information to make informed choices.  But still there is a gibberish babble, a confusion of signals that make understanding difficult.

I have been creating images that reference the Visible Woman, because, I, a saggy old grey lady, I am still trying to sort it all out.

The Forest is My Cathedral

The Forest Cathedral

Digital image, 2017

I have a deep need for nature.  Walking in the forest gives me an elevated feeling.  Petty concerns melt away and I feel a reverence for the earth.

A tree has a million leaves.  Each leaf has a beautiful design of branching veins.  If you look at the leaf microscopically there are a million perfect cells.  How can this happen?  The detail is staggering.  I find it difficult to explain this rationally and must resort to metaphysical wonderings.
