POMONA

POMONA
digital, archival prints

close up, head shot

Pomona is the Roman Goddess of fruitful abundance.

I named my vegetable garden after her.  The garden is 22'x22', rather small.  It is organic and I tend it with hand tools.  The recent harvest was abundant for the size of the garden.

The inspiration and reference for this digital painting is an ancient Roman statue.  The statue is approximately 1300 years old.  Prior to this Roman conception, the Greek Goddess Demeter had similar characteristics.  Prior to the Greeks the Sumerians named their goddess of agriculture Nibada.

I enjoy feeling a part of a stream of creations that have been developing for many centuries.

I hope she will inspire you to be abundant in whatever field you endeavor to cultivate.

VISION

archival digital print, 1/2022

 close up

Two new pictures completed this new year 2022, a year that we are hoping will be better than the train wreck of 2021.  I am grateful to be an artist in these troublesome times.  Time spent in my studio is an escape from "reality" into the "flow state" of creating.  Making art enriches my life, and I believe that creating beauty makes the world a bit better.

Who or what are these images that I create?  Are they Goddesses, dreamy earthlings, Angels, figments of my imagination, fantasies??  They are illustrations of the joy that I search for in life.  Metaphors for enlightenment.

Lately, I have thought of a reply that I can use if someone asks me, "What is your religion?".  My answer is, "I am a Spiritual Seeker".

I have been wondering "What is belief?"  A mental construct of our minds, that satisfies our earthling needs for reassurance that life has meaning.  Mental scaffolding for our baffling questions about existence.  I think that most religious teachings are metaphors for something, for what? for our basic need to know what we should be doing with our life.

I believe that there is a spiritual realm.  Something so above our limited verbal capabilities, something beyond words.  The spiritual realm can be experienced in elevated states of consciousness.  The experience may be more accurately communicated through images than words.

LOOK UP, GOLD

 LOOK UP, GOLD
acrylic on panel, 24"x16", about 2018

A triad of paintings, women's heads that are partially transparent, merging with the deep landscape.  The women are clothed in flowers, some with jewel like centers.  They are looking up.  Reaching for spiritual transcendence.  Feeling merged with the universe.

FLUID ENDURANCE, acrylic on panel, 24"x16", from a few years ago. What does it mean? Your guess is as good as mine, ha ha. I guess that she is having a spiritual experience. The circular motion and the integration of the head with the sky illustrates expanded consciousness. I use art to communicate the explorations of my mind. E-mail me to purchase.

Walk Tall, Two

 Walk Tall, Two
archival print, collage on panel, digital, 21-9-29

Another image of Walk Tall, with different colors and composition.

When I make art I am in the zone.  Color fascinates me.  Different combinations of colors contribute to the mood of the piece.  I favor sinuous lines and also use geometrix squares and zig zags. Harlequin patterns. Mandalas.

Lately, I have done a few portraits of imaginary women.  A variety of styles appear.  I start with a rough in of the features.  Sometimes, that is all I do, the face is cartoonish.  Other times, the face evolves to abstract geometrix.  I think that the most frequent style that i use for faces is painterly realistic.  I keep working until I get an expression that I like.

While I make decisions and create lines, shapes and color, I am in the zone.  Totally involved in a process that I enjoy.  I follow my muse, she is always showing me something new.  Making art, for over 50 years, has evolved my spirit.

Art is the way to communicate visually.  You are invited to explore this path with me.

WALKING TALL, close up

WALKING TALL,  face close up

The color glows, intense and harmonious.  The woman is walking through a flower mandala. There is a spiritual aura to her, perhaps she is traversing a portal to another state of consciousness.

Collage giclée of digital elements on panel.  Also available as an archival print.  Hanging on your wall, it will add a touch of joy to your room.  E mail me for collage,  go to Saatchi to order an archival print.

Shut up and Dance

 Wicked Good Boogie Band
Archival print, digital, 2006

Bringing back New Orleans, One Song at a Time.  Shut Up and Dance.  Music in Your Hair.  Wicked Good Boogie Band.

Here at the Studio in the Swamp, (Washington Parish, Louisiana), Katrina was much worse than Ida.  We enjoy being surrounded by forest. This is where I want to live, I love being surrounded by trees. Katrina tornados took all the leaves off of the trees.  The canopy was bare from the end of August, until the next spring, when Mother Nature revived herself.  I am grateful that our house and studio were not damaged.  We were without power for six weeks.  To cool off and bathe, we swam in the spring fed creek.  We did OK, because we like camping.  We did OK, but when the power came back on we were ready to really appreciate electricity.

New Orleans was settled in 1718, she has survived many storms and the civil war.  Soon, New Orleans will be better than ever.
